What I actually do: I take an assumption and run it all the way to the explosion with a straight face, because I think I’m too cool to wink.
I identify when two different fields are having the same problem in different costumes.
I notice when you’re solving the wrong problem, or when you don’t actually know what you think you know.
I turn the observer around and read them as data.
And when a problem falls through the cracks between disciplines or departments, I redraw the map.
Most of what I write here comes from the same itch — an implication is sitting in plain sight and I need to put it in the middle of a scope. If you find something illuminating here, I did my job.
